Have you ever wondered where a site is from, or maybe who owns the site, even who the site is registered with. We use a tool called who.is that enables you to get information about a site. We use this tool often to check where a site is from, who owns the domain, etc. We suggest using this tool if you are suspicious about a site. But, don’t be fooled. Some people register their sites here in the U.S. and use alias names or domain privacy to block the who.is tool from seeing who the actual owner is.
So, what information should you look for when using the who.is tool?
Check the expiration date of the domain. You want to look for domains that have been registered for extended periods of time as this shows a commitment to the domain name. It’s also an indicator that the website is not a temporary spam site.
How does you use the tool?
Go to www.who.is and simply enter the name of the website you want to check on. Of course, you don’t want to base your decision solely on this information. We we talk about that in a later blog.
