Weekly Tech Wrap Up: Latest News from Google, HTC, Logitech and Twitter

Google+ Allows Video Status. The Network Counts 90 Million Users – Google+ has implemented an option by which you can directly record video messages that you can then put them as status to be viewed by groups of friends. In order to have a video status, users can access the “Video sharing” option where they will find the “Record video” option. The video can be added as an attachment to any post on Google+. Until now, the Google+ users were able to publish animated GIFs and music through Google Music, but adding video clips could transform the social network into a real multimedia center.

Google+ now has 90 million users worldwide in just five months after the opening to the general public, in September last year. Larry Page, CEO Google, has expressed his enthusiasm (“super excited!”) for the rapid growth of the network, but without explaining the role played by Google+ integration into the search engine results. The figure of 90 million users globally is double compared to the predictions Google made after three months. The growth could be however caused by Google+ integration into the other Google services.

HTC Might Launch Its First Quad-Core Smartphone in February – HTC announced a major event on February 26, just before the MWC. Rumors say that it’s about the launch of HTC Edge, the first quad-core smartphone. The first unofficial images with HTC Edge have already made their appearance over the Internet. The smartphone would be equipped with a quad-core processor and a 4.7” screen with 720p HD resolution. HTC has not yet given any official information about the phone, but this is expected to come with the Android OS, probably Ice Cream Sandwich, and with 1.5 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor. The same day of the HTC event in Barcelona, just before the start of Mobile World Congress, Sony and Huawei are also set to launch new phones.

Logitech Presents The Next Generation of Webcams – Logitech has launched in collaboration with Skype, the C920 webcam, able to stream 1080p HD video with 30 fps. The new Logitech webcam is designed for the business segment, being recommended for teleconferences with high image quality. Logitech C920 will use the H.264 and USB Video Class (UVC) technologies. Through the H.264 compression, Logitech HD Pro webcam will not consume PC resources, allowing multiple programs running simultaneously with the teleconference. The webcam comes with a Carl Zeiss lens, allows autofocus in 20 steps and has two microphones. Shooting angle is 78 degrees, and the C920 will use the RightLight 2 technology for sharp images in low light conditions. For teleconferences with the highest image quality, Logitech recommends Skype 5.7 Beta for Windows.

Twitter Could Exceed 500 Million Users in February – Twitter could register a significant record in February 2012: 500 million users. Every second, 11 Twitter accounts are being created. This prediction belongs to Twopcharts, which says that currently there are 465 million Twitter accounts, and the date that 500 million figure will be reached is February 25. The increase in the number of Twitter accounts has accelerated over the past year. In May 2011, there were only 300 million accounts registered. Twitter announced in September 2011 that the number of active users is 100 million. Integrating Twitter in iOS 5 has contributed to tripling the number of accounts created by the users of iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
