In this week’s tech wrap up:
Foxconn Replaces Its Employees with Robots: Foxconn, the Chinese company responsible for 40% of global production of gadgets, has announced that it intends to replace its human workers with robots. Today, Foxconn is using 10,000 robots, but plans to increase this number to 300,000 in 2012! That’s pretty impressive and it’s also a way to get rid of employment laws, given the fact that the Chinese company came into the attention of press and labor activists last year after 18 workers had attempted suicide, and 14 of them succeeded.
Google Optimizes Tablet’s Search Engine: Google has announced its intention to optimize the search experience for tablets. The new version of the service will be available soon in 36 languages, for iPad and Android 3.1+ tablets. One major change is represented by the layout of results pages. Content pages, such as text, buttons and other applications for touch have been enlarged. The navigation bar on the left was replaced with a series of touch-friendly applications. Users can now easily alternate between options and results, videos or pictures. Google has also improved the image search, now offering previews of the enlarged image. The continuous scrolling thumbnails’ loading speed also contributes to achieve a more enjoyable browsing experience.
Alcatel-Lucent Wins Patent Lawsuit against Microsoft: A court in San Diego has decided that Microsoft has to pay the amount of $ 70 million to Alcatel-Lucent for violating a patent. The jury reached the decision that the patent used by Outlook for a touchscreen version has been copied. Microsoft is hoping to reduce the damage to $ 5 million, arguing that the patent in question is covering just a minor element. However, the court gave the right to those from Alcatel, who argue that the feature has played a “central role”. The verdict ends the one-year war between the two companies.
RIM Announces Two New Torch Versions: Research in Motion has revealed two new versions of the latest Blackberry smartphone. The Blackberry Torch 9810 and 9860/9850 both have 1.2 GHz processors, features that make BlackBerry handsets the most powerful on the market, with the ability to run 40% faster than previous versions of the device. Despite this equipment, the handsets remain equipped with the BlackBerry OS 7, which many critics consider it outdated and not so different than the older OS.
