This week has been pretty interesting for the tech world as we see new releases, buy-outs, revealing news about Tumblr’s security breach and the tech world’s influence on politics and governments.
In this week’s tech wrap up:
BlackBerry and Android Playing Nice – RIM announced the release of the BlackBerry tablet that will hit stores on April 19. In an interesting cross-platform twist the BlackBerry PlayBook has the ability to access Android Market and run Android apps. The 7 inch tablet has a capacitive touchscreen, 1GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth and the must have front and rear camera combo. The PlayBook supports Android 2.3 and BlackBerry Java written apps. The BlackBerry tablet comes in 3 versions and is available in pre-order starting at $499.99.
Google’s Think Quarterly – There’s no stopping Google as it ventures into publishing. The media giant released its online full length magazine in the UK that features data technology and useful business information. What’s interesting is that Google does not market it as an online magazine but rather a communication tool that helps business customers exchange information.
AT&T Buys Out T-Mobile – Deutsche Telekom and AT&T sealed the deal with a $39 billion T-Mobile acquisition that included stocks as well as cash. Regulatory requirements are still underway but once approved AT&T will be the biggest provider of wireless communication across the US. For now there’s no definitive news if T-Mobile will be offering iPhone anytime soon.
Facebook Gets another startup – The social networking giant recently acquired Snaptu, the buy out was priced at a whopping $70 million. The startup Israeli company specializes in creating mobile apps for feature phones or lower end mobile handsets. These Java-based mobile apps give low end cellphone the feel and functionality that can be found on most smartphones making social networking and mobile computing a more seamless experience.
Tumblr Security Breach – the blogging platform seem to be getting a bad rap lately for the security breach that according to them was due to a human error. Last March 19, the company released a statement that the coding error was being addressed and that there was no reason to suspect that private information was compromised. However, over the weekend it was discovered that passwords, IP addresses, API keys and other pertinent information may have been revealed and fixed over the weekend.
A Tweeting Nation – It has been said that Twitter has been instrumental in the Egyptian revolution as well as other national events. Now, the United Kingdom parliament has granted its official approval to send tweet updates from the House of Commons provided that it is done tastefully as only the British can. The House of Commons is also embracing technology allowing the use of smartphones and tablets to be used within the sessions while still banning laptops. These new tech changes will be given a one year trial period, which will hopefully be enough time to resolve the parliaments mixed emotions on the matter.
