Using Gmail for your Family Calendar

As kids get older, it gets harder to keep everyone on track with all their various activities. Now that many teens and adults have e-mail addresses, laptops and smart phones, however, keeping track of a family calendar is easy. Just use Gmail!

Gmail is a free e-mail and calendar service from Google. Anyone can sign up for an email address there. The e-mail is available from your computer, laptop or phone. The service also includes free calendaring system to use with your e-mail address and contacts. To set up a family calendar, do this:

1. Set up your e-mail addresses. Give each person in your family a gmail address to use. Setting up the address is simple — just go to gmail.com and follow the prompts.
2. Go to your calendar. Log in to your gmail account and you’ll find the link in the calendar on the top left.
3. Make a new event in your calendar. Fill in all the boxes to create your new event. Remember to select an e-mail reminder at the bottom so it will send all invited guests a reminder.

1. Invite family members to your event. Add their email addresses in the boxes to the right.

1. Save your event. The button is at the very bottom of the add form.
2. Repeat for all of your events. You can change who you “invite” to each event to put it on different calendars. Your kids can even put events on their calendars and invite you to let you know about them!
3. Set up your phone access and other settings. On the top right, there is a “Settings” button where you will find all the information you need on setting up your calendar on your phone or other mobile device. You can also create multiple calendars in the settings in case you want to put different events on different calendars.

Bonus tip: If you would like to do this with your own domain (for example, your-family-name.com or your-business-name.com), sign up for Google Apps (free edition) instead of Gmail.
