IPocalypse: Internet End of Days
The rumor that the Internet will soon run out of IP addresses has been circulating since the late 80’s and then again during the late 90’s along with the Y2K scare. As unbelievable as it may sound the Internet is really running out of IP addresses. This story has been confirmed by one of the Internet founding fathers, Vint Cerf who is also the Google VP. Cerf created IPv4, the web protocol that allows computers and other devices connect to each other, to private networks and to Internet. Today, the buzzword seems to be “IPocalypse”, the impending exhaustion Internet resources. However, this is no reason to start a panic streak and go web space hoarding. The important thing is to understand what it is and knowing how it affects you.

What exactly are smart appliances? These are next generation home products that can connect to the Internet, mobile devices and each other via wireless technology. It can be anything from a high-definition television, washing machine, refrigerators and robo-vacuum cleaners. These home buddies are also equipped with Demand Response Enabled (DRE) appliances that save and monitor energy usage, making your home a high-tech yet eco-friendly environment.
Desktops: Dead or Alive
Looking at the current technology trends at CES 2011, it seems that previous year’s predictions about desktops becoming extinct are becoming true. In 2009, a report by Mike Abramsky, an RBC market analyst predicted that towards the end of 2011, desktop sales will decline to be replaced by soaring smartphone sales. While according to Forrester Research Inc. tablets will become the computer of choice as desktop sales are predicted to continually decline in the next few years. Mobile computing is indeed becoming the trend, but is this really the beginning of the end for desktop computers?
