In the “browser wars”, plug-ins and extensions play a crucial part. One reason why Firefox is still the number one browser of choice is because of the collection of extensions and plug-ins not found in many other browsers. However, Google Chrome is catching up with its own army of add-ons. Its collection ranges from simple bookmarking to SEO tools. Here’s a quick review of recommended Chrome extensions and plug-ins, not in any order:
1. AddThis – a social media extension that allows you to bookmark, share, email, and translate any page. It has links to different social media making it easier for you to share favorite sites, pictures, articles or videos via Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, Instapaper, Posterous and a lot more. You can translate pages in multiple languages and it autoconfigures based on usage.
2. Google Mail Checker Plus – lets you see the number of unread messages, preview email, read, delete, archive and mark messages as spam in your Gmail and Google Apps inbox.
3. Currency Converter -This extension adds a button to your toolbar that opens a pop up window where you can convert 162 different currencies. It also uses Yahoo! Finance to give more currency options.
4. Xmarks Bookmarks Sync – the most popular book marking plug-in that synchronizes between two or more computers and across web browsers. It is also available in Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari. It also has the ability to synchronize your passwords and open tabs across computers and browsers.
5. Turn Off the Lights – if you enjoy watching videos in you computer, this is the add on for you. Clicking on the lamp button will make the page fade to dark and automatically focus on the video as if you are in a movie theater. Another click on the lamp icon restores settings to normal.
6. Web of Trust – more commonly called as WOT, provides an overview of the website before you visit them, protecting you from malware or spam. It also gives a list of sites that are known for scams, as well as age-related ratings. This add-on provides reputation ratings when you search using Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Wikipedia and other popular sites. This helps protect your computer, personal information and online email accounts in Google Mail, Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail.
7. Google Chrome to Phone Extension – If you see something on the internet and want to suggest it to a friend with an android phone, this add on lets you seamlessly transfer maps, links, text, and phone numbers to your android phone. For this to work, the Chrome to Phone Android app needs to be installed on the recipient’s phone too.
8. AdBlock – blocks ads from all over the web from downloading and popping into your computer.
9. Chrome SEO – you can know your blog or website statistics simply by clicking on this button. It provides a quick view of how your site is doing based on Competitive Analysis, PageRank Checks, Keyword Research, Backlink Checks, and other daily SEO tasks.
10. eBay extension for Google Chrome – this extension lets you keep an eye on your eBay activity, get more out of buying and selling, wherever you are on the web.
Google Chrome is definitely giving Firefox a run for its money with a unique and more user-friendly way of browsing. Great add-ons combined with Chrome’s speed, simplicity and compatibility make this browser a powerful way to journey the web.
