The last decade has been marked with amazing technological leaps that seem to propel us into a life of science fiction. When the first cellphone was invented, a lot of people thought that the future has finally arrived, and it did by way of smartphones, tablets and mobile gadgets turning up every two seconds. However, this process of evolution is not without hits and misses, technology changes at a rapid pace and only the fittest survive. Some inventions went down the drain while others paved the way for new technology. Here’s our top 5 list of best tech stuff from the bygone era and beyond.
Nintendo Family Computer – before PlayStation and Xbox came into being, there was the Nintendo Family Computer. This Japanese invention dominated the gaming console market for over two decades. Every household had one and Super Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda were the “IN” thing. It was the coolest 80’s gadget, with the classic red and white theme, 2 controllers and a cartridge slot. Each cartridge can contain anywhere from 1 to 100 games that can keep anyone glued to the screen for hours.
The Old 45’s – These are long playing records that last up to 45 minutes, a leap in the record industry with it’s predecessor playing less than 5 minutes per side. Yep, per side, these were the days when records have to be turned over to play the second half. Some argue that the analog sound is way better and has more character. Today, they are considered as collectors items although some club DJ’s still use them along side CD’s, media players and digital equalizers.
Java – This is not your regular cup of Joe but a programming language that changed the way the world looks at the Internet in the mid-90’s. It is a universal language programmers used to develop software that can be used anywhere from the Internet, mobile phones and other devices. Today Java powers countless devices used in many different fields from the practical to total time wasting games.
Universal Serial Bus standard – or USB is perhaps one of the greatest collaborations ever. It was created by IBM, Intel, Compaq, DEC, NEC, Microsoft and Northern Telecom to serve as the standard plug-and-play connector between computers and other devices such as keyboards, printers, media players, gaming consoles and storage devices. This made life easier for everyone bidding farewell to stacks of adapter cards and drivers.
Dynabook – If you thought the tablet PC is a new concept, think again! The Dynabook, which pretty much looked like a tablet PC with a hard keyboard, is the brainchild of computer genius Alan Kay, conceptualized in 1968. The idea was to create a portable personal computer that contained information in encyclopedic proportions meant to be used by kids. It was ahead of its time in so many ways and it is only now that we have the technology to create it. The Dynabook is indeed the grand daddy of mobile computing!

Blast from the past, nice list here. Amazing how far technology has come.
I just looked up that Dynabook and it claims to have “near eternal battery life” wonder how that works? This thing was way before it’s time though.
What a joy to find such clear tinkhing. Thanks for posting!
