Tips to Social Networking Success

Today’s buzzword is social networking, succeeding in the social networking ladder translates to more website hits, higher web ranking and lots and lots of dollars. For some, it may not be all about business; it could also be for fun. Having your own share of the limelight and being an overnight YouTube sensation never goes out of style. Speaking of style, it may be something you need to refine if you want to succeed in a world that is ever changing. Here are some social networking faux pas you want to avoid.

  • Watch your Tongue – or in this case, fingers. Remember that whatever you put on the net stays there forever. Just as in life, if you want more friends, be more social and approachable. Sure, there are people who succeeded because of their own special brand of cyber bashing but not everyone can be a Perez Hilton. Sarcasm is a double edged sword and could go the wrong way if you are not careful. Think of the image you want to project and go from there.

  • Be consistent -  Social networking takes a lot of time, however you have to remember that in order to have followers and keep them, you have to be consistent.  Remember that if you stop updating your status, tweets or posts, people will get bored too and move on to the next big thing. Make a schedule and stick to it, or better yet, use software and apps that let you send scheduled updates to your social network. This way you can write all in one go and send them automatically each day of the week, like Hootsuite. It can send and schedule updates for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Myspace, WordPress and Ping.fm as well as monitor your mentions.

  • Religion and Politics – Most people join social networks to have a good time and connect with others. Sensitive issues such as politics and religion can be a touchy subject that can lead to debates which can cast a negative light on your profile. As much as it is a free country, people want to leave debates for the women of The View. For a budding social network sensation, it is best to stay away from these topics and be neutral.

  • Half-baked Profile – Your profile says everything about you and an incomplete profile and a boring page just won’t cut it if you want people to be interested in what you have to say. People want to see who you are, what your business is all about and what’s in it for them. Make sure that your homepage, blog, Twitter and Facebook profile, flow into a common theme so that people will identify it with your business much easier. Find out ways to pimp up your blog or homepage with plug-ins but be careful as to not overload it. People hate waiting and if your page takes forever to load because of to many ad-ons, people might be compelled to move elsewhere.

  • Spammy Sales Person – Of course, as a small business you go to the social networks to boost your image and sell your company, however spamming people with your affiliate links and overly promoting your business can be tiresome for people to look at. Instead of sending endless tweet links telling people to “Check Out” or “Buy Now”, say something interesting about your product, without overdoing it. Your goal is to keep people interested instead of driving them away with just another sales pitch.
