Online shopping carries with it some risks. Following these basic tips so that you can help ensure a safe online shopping experience.
Ensure your PC is secure
This is the most important thing. Everday, new threats enter the cyber realm and you need to make sure you computer is up to date with the latest patches, program updates, and anti-virus database updates. My Tech Team ensures its customers are safe and everything is up to date, ensuring a safe online presence.
Beware of your clicking
You are going to be getting a lot of offers via e-mail this holiday season. While SOME are legitimate offers, some offers will come from cyber criminals trying to get you to download some rogue application or send you to a fake site that appears to be a real shopping site. The best way to protect yourself is to not click any links. Instead, type in the URL of the site you want to go to in your address bar. Also, be careful to spell the URL correctly. Improper spelling may take you to a rogue site which attempts to mimic the site you intended to visit.
Visit known sites
If you are not familiar with the site, do some research by typing its name in a search engine. Often times if you attach the word “scam” to the end of the site you are researching, you may come across several previous reports on the sites successful scam schemes. Another good idea is to look for ratings. Many search engines have a shopping section which hold products from known affiliated merchants. You are generally safe with these shopping aggregators.
Pay by credit card
Credit cards give you added protection byincluding the right to charge-back if you are a victim of fraud, and if fraud can be proven. Also, some credit card companies offer a virtual vanity number. Virtual vanity numbers allow you to temporarily create a new credit card number with a set amount to be spent, and set an expiration date. This protection ensures only the amount intended is charge one time. If someone attempts to charge the card with a different amount or tries to charge it outside of the expiration date set by you, it will be invalid.
Following these tips will decrease the odds of you being victimized by online fraud. My Tech Team will be working hard to protect it’s customers during the holiday season and beyond.
