Tips for Browsing Smarter and Faster

Slow browsing and pages that take forever to load are some of the main reasons that people call online technical support. When a computer shows signs of slow browsing the immediate step is to optimize the browser, some go as far as  sprucing up the computer by adding accelerators, memory and other what not. However, there are other ways to speed up a browsing experience without going to extreme measures. There are a few tips to browse smarter and faster, what’s important is finding the solution that works for you.

  • Choose your browser wisely – not all browsers are created equal and this is a fact. Some are faster than its peers and Google Chrome, Firefox top the list of fast browsers with minimalist features. A good browser should have features such as tabbed browsing, 2-in-one address/search bar and accelerated text.  Although in the past Internet Explorer was the least popular choice, the launch of IE9 changed this with its one-click features and accelerated text and multi-media.
  • Use Tab Browsing – instead of opening 5 or six windows, use the tabs in the browser. It allows you to go from one web page to another without having to switch form one window to another. It eliminates wasting your time opening and closing each window until you find what you are looking for. Some browsers like Chrome treat each tab as individual, meaning if one website crashes for some reason, it does not affect the other tabs.
  • Use Keyword bookmarks – we are all familiar with bookmarks or favorites, one way to faster browsing is using a keyword bookmark. You can customize your keywords to anything you can remember; the shorter it is the faster you can go to your page. For example instead of typing My Tech Team you can use tech as a keyword bookmark and the address bar will auto-fill and direct you to your website. For Firefox this can be done by editing the keyword on your bookmark’s properties.

For Google Chrome, the easiest way to do this is edit the keywords by right-clicking on the address of the bookmarked page, go to Edit Search Engines and editing the keywords.

  • Turn Off Flash and Images – Flash is present in most websites and some even need it to load properly so you need to be cautious in turning this off. If, however you are researching something that is highly text based and will not use a lot of graphics you can turn this off. You can also download browser plug-ins that let’s you manage Flash and turn tit on when necessary. In the same manner you can also use the option to not show images in your browsers Options, usually found under content settings. Bear in mind that this option will display web pages differently and you will only see text from the websites that you will be viewing.
