The Desktop Computer is Dead, Thank The Cloud

Do you own a desktop computer?  Why? There used to be a point in time where the laptop was very limited with what you could do with it. Nowadays, with the rapid advance in technology and the onset of cloud computing, laptops now allow us to do just as much or more than a desktop while mobile, or not tied to one location.

While desktop prices have fallen dramatically, so has the demand.  Desktops seem to be the popular staple of gamers or perhaps large businesses, but there has been a great shift towards mobility for the average user and small businesses.  The laptop has become common in most households with each member owning one.  Now, with tablets and slate computers, laptops are becoming less “mobile” and become the new desktop.  In other words, laptops are starting to be a local mobile options while tablets and slates are the take anywhere option.

With cloud storage services such as Box, Rackspace, and Google Apps people are becoming less dependent cloud-computingon hardware and more concerned with mobility and anywhere access.

So, what is “cloud computing”? Cloud computing is a marketing term for technologies that provide computation, software, data access, and storage services that do not require end-user knowledge of the physical location and configuration of the system that delivers the services.

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing as a service rather than a product, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices as a utility (like the electricity grid) over a network (typically the Internet).

Even new wireless routers are more geared towards mobility with options such as FTP, easy remote access set up, and the ability to attach an external drive to the router for anytime anywhere access to your files – essentially, building your own cloud.

In the future, we see every household hosting their own “cloud” with minimal equipment – just a router and an external drive.  And with services such as Google’s cloud print, you can print to your home or office printer from anywhere.
