There are so many things happening in the digital world that sometimes it can be hard to figure out what matters. Pretty much like everyday mail, we come across a lot of junk, but who’s to say what’s important for one person is the same for the rest, right? To minimize the technological clutter, we’ve summed up the latest tech news of the past week relevant to everyday computing you might have missed.
Google’s Crackdown on Content Farms – The premier search engine has announced a change in search algorithms that removes content farm results from the top searches. This means that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) driven content and sites specializing in creating article base and content resources will take a back seat. That means if you are a blogger, an SEO writer or are managing a site using SEO to get more readers, you can expect a decline in visitors that come from search results. Google says it is all about business and the goal is to bring more relevant and quicker results to users. Although the motivation behind the change may be positive, it does not sit well with a lot of online content businesses.
Facebook “Like” Button Trumps Share Function – This is yet another “enhancement” on the Facebook experience. The social networking site has changed the way the “Like” button works by having it function like the Share button. Now after liking a specific link, instead of a one-liner update on your wall it will show a full story, thumbnails and all in your profile. Pretty much like what happens when you share a link. The goal of the change is to drive traffic to publishers’ websites although it might irk some users, who do not like everything to be splashed on their wall. For those who love it, it may be a good time to try out American Idol’s Facebook voting.
Latest Linkedin News – the business hub has recently announced enhancements on the user’s profile and has taken socializing a step further this month by creating Linkedin InMaps and Linkedin Swarm, making the service a more visual and social experience. However the business networking site does not seem to be doing well on the other side of the world. The service was temporarily blocked in China last Friday, because of a forum discussing a “Jasmine Revolution” that did not sit well with the government.
Steve Jobs – when you are as wealthy as this Apple founder, rumors are bound to hound. In recent weeks there have been talks about the founders’ life expectancy after he announced that he will take time off work, for a medical leave. News spread that his health concerns were more serious than reported and that he only has six weeks to live. The ill conceived rumor is speculated to have a negative effect on the company’s stocks, just like what happened when Jobs left Apple in 2009. No news has been confirmed from Jobs, but you know what they say about that which doesn’t kill you.
