Summer’s Malware Campaign

The summer and holiday plans seem to be a blessing, but pay attention to any dangers that may arise in the most unexpected moment, warn BitDefender experts. It’s a game where everyone loses except for cybercriminals: paying customers are losing money, and the big fake companies are making the scams that cause losses in credibility and customer base to the real company.

A hidden malicious e-mail as a spam message of budget reimbursement threatens those who intend to go on a holiday vacation. The user receives a message from a hotel that informs them that there was a problem with transferring money between banks at which the user owns an account and the hotel.

Given this situation, the user is then asked to complete an attached form, which is actually a downloader type of malware. The names of prestigious hotels such as Campton, Marriott or Sheraton appear in the titles of such messages in order to give more credibility to the scam.

The Trojan.Generic.KD.301243, as identified by BitDefender, is targeting applications such as clients of instant messaging, FTP transfer applications and even web browsers, in order to steal the users authentication data. The goal is only one: those who have orchestrated the campaign intend to create a database with as many e-mails as possible.  Furthermore, FTP accounts collected will be used to host malware on the victim’s expense.

Summer is a true inspiration for criminals, since they are always finding new tricks to attract people to reveal their confidential data. As a common element, it has been observed that in the most recent cases, users are more likely fooled to voluntarily disclose sensitive information, rather than being the target of silent malicious attacks.

The social engineering has an important role in today’s malware landscape: fake commercial websites, cloned bank websites and fake Apple stores from China are some examples of threats from the virtual environment that can ruin everybody’s holiday and that can leave your bank accounts empty.
