SmartPhone Troubles – Watch Your Bill!

In the war of wireless data usage through cell phones, AT&T has taken the latest hit with the news that it may drop their unlimited data packages for their iPhone/SmartPhone users and create a tiered price structure for their users based on data usage, or they will strongly encourage users to uses WiFI networks instead of wireless. While this may only have an effect on AT&T customers, all cell phone and wireless data users should use this as a reminder to keep an eye on their contract policies and terms when choosing a new policy, renewing their contract, upgrading their phone, or changing their plan. If you are considering a new or change of phone plan, you may want to keep these tips in mind:

  • Coverage and usage. Are you a heavy user or just occasional? Do you stay in town or do you drive state to state? Do you travel internationally? Take these factors into consideration and you won’t be left without a phone when you need it the most.
  • Contract terms and conditions. Can you change your plan or your phone after your contract starts? How long does your contract last? Would you better off without a contract? (You may pay more initially for a non-contract phone, but it can save low-volume users in the long run.) Does your contract have any special conditions? Knowing the answers to these questions will make sure that you don’t end up with an early termination fee if you want to switch phones or change your plan.
  • Reviews. It is very easy to find reviews of phones, plans, coverage and customer service of the company online. Try letting Google, CNET, or PC World help you with phrases like “[phone name] review” and “[carrier name] coverage”.
  • Compatibility. Does your new phone work with your existing software and hardware? You’ll want to make sure of your phone’s requirements before you end up having to upgrade your home wireless network or buy new PC software just to work with your new phone.
  • Handle the phone. I have seen many smart phones that look great online but are awkward to use in reality, so I suggest finding a retail store to actually hold and use the phone before you buy it — even if you will eventually be purchasing online. And watch for sales! Even newer phones go on sale right before the next model comes out, and that can mean big savings for you.

They have started this now I am grandfathered into a pretty cheap unlimited data plan with at&t, but if I get a new phone with a contract it’s game over for that. At&t is probably the most expensive with the least coverage and features for cell phones.

Sure enough AT&T has moved into 4G when they couldn’t even get 3G right. Now the phone data plans are more expensive and their coverage is still terrible.
