New Facebook Subscribe Button

Facebook added a new button in the social network’s interface. The subscribe button allows subscription to the public updates list of any Facebook user, regardless of whether the person is in our friends list or not.

The new function is part of a larger effort made to improve the control provided to users on their own Facebook account and sources of information available.

The subscribe button can be seen along with the buttons Poke and Message, providing a way to monitor the content posted by other Facebook users, without having to first add them as friends. However, the available information is more varied if we subscribe to the list of updates of a friend on Facebook.

The subscribe function gives us the opportunity to choose exactly the kind of content we want to follow. For example we can choose to receive updates in the news feed only a person’s status, ignoring the less important details such as new photos added to the profile.

If the user followed is in the friends list, then the control given over the information received is smoother. Thus, if selecting the All Updates option in the News Feed, the user will be in touch with all the news about the other user. However, if we still do not want to be bombarded with so much information, choosing the option Only Important reduces the amount of information to only essential details such as the engagement of a person.

Fortunately for those who value their privacy, the Subscribe function can be completely disabled, thus blocking other users subscribing to the information available on our profile.

If we still choose not to block this service, than our subscribers will appear in the account page. Also, it must be said that that although users are already in the list of Facebook friends, they are not automatically becoming subscribers for the user account information, the new ones added by accepting the friend requests are automatically subscribed to for the public updates in the user account.

The subscribe option can be a very effective way to transmit information to a wide audience consisting of other Facebook users, whether or not they are added as friends. The system adds a level of complexity to a social network already very loaded with options more or less useful, with the potential to generate new controversies about the questionable level of privacy given to the Facebook users.
