Windows 7 has proven to be a reliable companion compared to its predecessor, Vista. The operating system offers stability and flexibility when it comes to daily computing. If you have switched to Windows 7 recently, you might want to check out our tips and tricks for beginners. Below are more cool tricks you can do to make this OS work for you.
- Start it right – if you do not have a recovery disc yet, it might be a good idea to make one in case you need it for later. If you encounter problems in the future, a system repair disc may be your only hope to get your computer running. Simply Click Start > All Programs > Maintenance > Create a System Repair Disc and Windows 7 will create an emergency disc for you. Of course, do not forget to have a new disc ready in your disc drive, or perhaps a powerful enough USB.
- Switch printers in a jiffy – Win7 has location-aware printing that allows users to switch printers from one network to another. From the Start Menu, type Devices on the search bar and go to the Devices and Printers. Choose from the list of available printers, if you are on a laptop or tablet, you will see Manage Default Printers. Choose the option to “Change my default printer when I change networks”, select the network and printer, and then click on Add. You can add more networks at a time, this way your computer will recognize default printers in each of the added networks and switch to it automatically.
- A faster Internet Explorer – as much as we all love add-ons it can be a pain when they cause things to load slower than usual. IE8 that comes with the OS has the ability to tell you who’s causing the delay. On Internet Explorer click on Tools> Manage Add-ons> Load Time and you will know which of your add-ons is hoarding your computer’s resources. You can choose to disable these add-ons by clicking on them.
- When speed is of the essence – sometimes you are just in such a hurry that shortcuts are necessary to make life easier. Windows 7 lets you launch another program without having to go to the Start Menu all the time. For example you are working on a Word document and you need to open a new on, simply hold down the Shift button and click on the MS Word icon and Win7 will open another one for you.
- Everything to the right- Windows 7 gives you easy access to all your settings by right-clicking on everything. No need to navigate and get lost if you want to change your screen resolution, simply right-click on a blank part of your desktop and your there, right-clicking on the Explorer icon takes you to your media files, documents and Windows folder.
