During the 2011 Microsoft World Wide Partner Conference event, Microsoft provided some interesting details about the organization of their operating systems and even the future of the Windows brand, a name that the company seems determined to abandon pretty soon.

Microsoft - Unified Ecosystem for PCs, Tablets and Phones
Microsoft aims at a unified ecosystem that includes PCs, mobile phones, tablets and even TVs. All proceeds from the idea of making available the full set of facilities offered to a PC user, to any product that runs a Microsoft operating system, regardless of its format. The strategy is designed to enable the usage of a common and easy-to-identify interface by any type of device, and to facilitate the access to key-technologies such as Internet Explorer and other components of the operating system.
From the still unconfirmed information, we find out that the name of the unified operating system may be a new one. It seems Microsoft may be abandoning the Windows brand in favor of one that more closely reflects the new vision of the company.
Viewing things from a less critical point of view, Microsoft’s strategy to provide a single operating system and interface for multiple types of devices seems to be a return to the Windows Mobile era.
