Kyocera Echo: Seeing Things Double

kyocera-echoSprint has recently introduced another industry first; the Kyocera Echo is a dual touch-screen smartphone that runs on Android 2.2 and comes with a 2-year Sprint subscription. With ground breaking multitasking technology, this smartphone has features that you didn’t even know you needed. With the release date slated sometime spring of this year; there is much anticipation about Sprint’s latest offering.

The phone can be put in single or dual screen mode allowing users to do and view multiple things at the same time. The dual screen lets the user check an email and watch a video at the same time, for example and do all the other things that smartphones can. For users who want a bigger view of things, they can use the single screen mode and view a 4.7 inch display with both screens combined. Both displays are connected by a pivot hinge that allows them to be used together or separately, depending on the users needs.

The Echo is a versatile piece of equipment that can be used in four different ways. The single-screen mode allows for a bigger display, combining the two 3.5 inch WVGA screens. The simul-task mode let the use choose 2 of the 7 core apps built into the Echo and have one run on each display at the same time. Echo’s core apps include a browser, email, address book, phone, gallery and VueQue. VueQue is a Youtube app that lets users view video on one screen and list related or queued clips on the other.  There is also the optimized mode where apps that complement each other can be used together like a virtual keyboard on one and a word processor on the other. Lastly, a phone like this would not be living to its expectations if it did not have a tablet mode, the smartphone also acts as a tablet with a single 4.7 inch, 800X900 pixel display. Of course, the down side would be the visible partition in the middle.

The phone also sports a 5 mega-pixel rear camera with digital zoom and a flash as well as a 720p high-definition video camcorder to capture life’s unexpected moments on the go.  It has a media player and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, GPS capabilities such as Elena GPS navigator, accelerometer, digital compass, proximity and light sensor. It is also a handicapable device with a Hearing Aid compatibility rating of M4/T4.

Being an Android 2.2 powered device, this smartphone has WiFi hotspot capability which can support up to 5 devices as well as access thousands of apps on the Android Market.  Under the hood it has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 3GB data speeds with download speeds ranging from 1.8mbps to 3.1 mbps. It also has an 8GB microSD card and an expandable memory of up to 32 GB.

There have been concerns regarding smooth flowing navigation of the dual screens, however that would still need to be tested once the product ships out. Until then, based on the specs alone, this is one smartphone that has got a lot of iPhone users to switch to the other side.
