In today’s economy, having a good online presence is a key ingredient in landing a job and having a good career. It is a known fact that employers often use the internet to do back-ground checks on prospective employees. Having a clean online profile is every bit as important as having an impressive resume. Once that is taken care of, you can take advantage of social media and online communities to boost your career options and increase your chances at landing a job. Having an online resume, your own website or blog, is also a great idea to market yourself and build a network. Here are some familiar yet excellent places to jump start your career.
Facebook – it is not just a place to post your shout outs, upload wacky pictures and keep tabs on your ex. If used properly, it can keep you on the top of employers lists. There are plenty of groups, online communities and companies that have Facebook pages. You can use this to your advantage by making them part of your network. “Like” companies that you want to be part of, join groups, contests and actively participate in discussions. Take care not to become a nuisance, be professional and think of it as part of an interview so you can keep your wits about you.
Twitter – Believe it or not, people have been known to land jobs via Twitter. The micro-blogging site has also become a hub for employers and providers. People have said “You are what you tweet” and this truth is what potential employees live by so it is important to tweet professionally. It will be a good idea to clean up your profile for this one. You can also use Twitter hash tags for your job related chats, employment listings and conferences with live tweets. You can chime in to these discussions and market your skills while staying relevant to the topic at hand.
YouTube – Known as the best friend of break out artists and overnight sensations. YouTube has been known to turn people from rags to riches by showcasing their talents and praying hard that their videos go viral. A video application or AVP of your skills, talents and services is far more exciting than a plain old resume, this shows people just how interesting and great to work with you really are. Creativity aside, you do have to take care that your content is professional. Although many have succeeded in gaining YouTube popularity, a lot of those did not get it for the right reasons.
The web is full of opportunities; one merely needs to look at the right place to do it. Remember when seeking for job opportunities, do a little investigating on the companies yourself so you can avoid being scammed. Avoid sites, employers and job opportunities that ask you for money or credit card information, it is one sure way to tell your being screwed.
