In a previous post, we discussed using the iPad for productivity. Over time the iPad has grown to become a favorite tool for the mobile professional and in this post we will discuss how the iPad can help the traveling professional.
We don’t travel that often, but when we do, it’s nice to have tools that will help ease the stress of travel. Again, we began our app hunt. The first, and probably our favorite app is called Flight Track Pro. Flight Track Pro gives you everything you need to manage your flights in real-time. With over 5000 airports listed and over 1400 airlines available, it’s the most comprehensive way to monitor your flights. It even has an offline mode for in-flight use. Some of the features of Flight Track Pro include:
- Covers more than 1,400 airlines and more than 4,000 airports
- Weather radar overlay on map view for North America
- Gate information for flights
- Baggage claim information
- Find alternate flights
- Search and add flights up to 11 months in advance
- Localizations: English, German, French, Spanish
- Use "Repeating Flight" function to track same flight daily
- Sync flights with your phone’s calendar (iOS only)
- Aircraft type
- Flight delay forecast charts
- Seating info from SeatGuru for most flights
- Push alerts for flight updates
- FAA airport delays & closures
- Terminal maps for arriving and departing airports (iOS only)
- Weather forecast for both arrival and departure airports
The terminal map was of great use, plus we weren’t stuck staring at those large flight boards scattered throughout the airports. We knew exactly where to go, what flights were delayed, weather reports for our destinations, and more!
The next travel app that was of great use is TripAdvisor. TripAdvisor is, well, the perfect trip advisor. This app enables you to plan and have the perfect trip with access to real traveler reviews, opinions, photos, maps, and forums that can answer even the most specific questions when you’re on the go. However, the single most useful feature for us is called “Things To Do”. What this does is uses your current location, or you can manually enter a location, and tells you the attractions and other things to do near you or your entered location.
Last, but certainly not least, is Kayak. This app brings the fast flight and hotel search of KAYAK.com to an app designed just for iPad. You can also use their Explore feature to search for travel based on your budget. And best of all, KAYAK for iPad is free.
Put it all together, and you have the perfect travel companion. Search and schedule your travel with Kayak, keep track of your flights, baggage, terminal locations and more with Flight Track Pro, and know where to go and what to do with TripAdvisor.
Do you have an iPad? Which travel apps have you found useful? Stay tuned for part 3 of this mini series, web conferencing.
