For a couple of months now rumors have been circling around Apple Inc. both about Steve Jobs and his medical condition and the much fabled iPad 2 release. Rumors about Jobs declining health condition have been creating a buzz within the IT and business hub since he took his medical leave a few weeks ago. Bits and pieces about the new iPad features including a front-facing camera have also been leaking from everywhere keeping techies salivating and couldn’t wait to get their hands on them. Well both issues were made top rest yesterday at the unveiling of a thinner, faster and sleeker iPad 2 and the surprise appearance of the man of the hour, Steve Jobs. Jobs appeared well, although he did add a belt to his usual black turtle neck attire.
iPad 2 got a facelift from its makers, now it is thinner and lighter making it more comfortable to use. According to Jobs the new release is 33% thinner and 15% lighter than the older version. It is powered by a dual-core A5 chip making everything twice as fast. Speed that according to Jobs can be felt and seen when you surf, play games, watch videos, use Facetime, or swipe from app to app. That power partnered with iOS 4.3 makes for seamless multi-tasking and excellent graphics. iOS 4.3 also allows for iTunes sharing, faster browsing and WiFi capabilities that can make the iPad 2 a mobile hub for iPhone.
Another new feature is the front and rear facing cameras for all that Facetime action users also enjoyed with the iPhone 4. They may be a bit small but do not let them fool you. The rear camera is capable of HD video recording with 720pixels at 30 frames/second including audio and a 5X digital zoom. Meanwhile the front facing camera will surely make anyone look good with VGA quality video and photo settings.
The battery life is the same at 10 hours, using a built-in 25 watt hour rechargeable lithium polymer battery, however with the power efficient processor and iOS it can keep things going to give you enough juice to pull an all-nighter. You can also purchase the optional iPad Smart Cover ($39), a magnetic case that puts the iPad 2 on sleep mode the moment tuck it in. The Smart Cover can also act as a stand and comes in ten different colors, from a young and vibrant pink to corporate black.
What’s best about this new iPad version is that it is the same price as the original iPad. Prices start at $499 for the WiFi version, the 3G version retails for $629 and can be bought bundled with AT&T or Verizon. This sales strategy has never failed Apple before and the same magic is expected to work again. The iPad 2 is said to ship out by next week, March 11th and can be purchased both online and at stores near you.
