Internet Explorer 9 – The Best Browser in Blocking Malware Attacks

After years of criticism, during which Internet Explorer was always taken as an example of how it should not be made a web browser, behold the Internet Explorer 9 managed to show an improvement, implementing a security system that gives excellent results at blocking malware attacks, surpassing in this its competitors, Google Chrome 10 and Firefox 4.

Internet Explorer 9 - The Best Browser in Blocking Malware Attacks

The two-front attack led by Internet Explorer 9 against malware, using SmartScreen Filter to block dangerous URLs and Application Reputation to prevent unsafe launch applications, provides the best level of security of all current stable web browsers versions. Thus, SmartScreen Filter – the first level of protection from Internet Explorer 9 – was able to block 92% of the malware components, while Application Reputation System increased the success rate to 100%. On the other side of the ranking we find the Opera 11 browser with a success rate of only 5% and Safari 5, Chrome 10 and Firefox 4 are equal, they being able to block only 13% of malware attacks.

The study conducted by NSS Labs has taken into account only those websites that try to trick the visitors into installing malicious software, without including any security holes slipped into the design of browsers. The target audience consists mainly of users on the European continent and the filtered list of URLs was harvested from e-mail spam, instant messages and postings in online social networks.

Actually, the identical performance measured between Safari 5, Chrome 10 and Firefox 4 are due to using the same data source for compiling the list of dangerous URLs provided by Google Safe Browsing system. Among the few differences noted, Firefox is remarked by the slightly improved performance in blocking dangerous URLs, but taken together, the changes are insignificant.

Opera uses a similar service provided by the manufacturer of AVG antivirus solutions. Although modest, the success rate of 5% is still an improvement over 0%, as would be achieved without implementing a system to block dangerous URLs. Adding the new websites into the exclusion list for Opera takes on average 48 hours, while other browsers shorten this time to only 13 hours.

Using the system SmartFilter URL scanner and Application Reputation allowed obtaining significantly improved results with Internet Explorer 9 than any other browser tested. Unfortunately the price paid comes in the form of a large number of false alarms received when trying to download applications from less well-known websites, even if they are completely harmless.

Firefox 5.0 is out now. This is interesting to see them battle for position.

Actually, they’ve just announced the 8th version of Firefox. I must say they’re kinda overwhelmed by their competitors.
