2011 is the year of tablets and smartphones, with this also comes the explosion of mobile applications. There are literally hundreds of apps being created everyday, from those that actually help, to complete time-wasters and those that are just plain old absurd. Pimple Popper ring a bell?
It seems that everyone is jumping on the apps bandwagon from giant mobile manufacturers to network vendors and even 14-year old boys like Robert Nay who created Bubble Ball. So far, game apps are the most popular downloads next to social networking, entertainment and navigation apps. Regardless of how we look at them, mobile applications are here to stay and everyday new trends are emerging, changing the way we do things. Here are the hottest mobile app trends that we can look forward to this year.
Social Media – This is a no brainer. Social networking is so big right now that almost everything can be linked to a Twitter of Facebook account. This is the age of following, liking and friending. Phenomenon not just merely for normal people, big companies are also putting themselves out there and using it as a marketing strategy to personalize their approach to consumers. We can look forward to more streamlined social networking apps this year allowing users to update their status, browse pictures and post reviews without having to sign in each and every app or thumb through a lot of apps.
Augmented Reality – apps like Layar, Juniao and Metiao have their work cut out for them this year as augmented reality is slowly taking center stage in the app market. Augmented reality is a new way of looking at reality. You can view the world through your mobile phones camera in a whole new enhanced manner, telling you directions and other information about the world ahead of you. It may have been rough around the edges last year but judging from Superbowl’s augmented reality tour, these apps can become a staple for hundreds of events this year.
Automotive apps – This category seems like the sleeper cell of all apps, although they do not get as much media mileage, automotive apps are some of the most downloaded from Apple App Store and Android Market. Automotive apps come with their own collection of games, car-specific functions, gas-finders and even driving tutorials. Although, wouldn’t it distract one from driving in the first place?
Hands-Free Apps – This answers our previous question. Recognizing that use of mobile devices is being outlawed in some states developers are looking to voice –recognition technology. Pretty soon voice activated apps will dominate the app market, and people can place calls, shuffle through their play list and surf hands-free.
Adult Apps – Yes, there is no denying that adult entertainment is big business; Apple and Android both understand this, thus the collection of apps with adult content. Apple did attempt to ban several apps that were too obscene but still, some made it through. It may be a bit risqué, especially since it does not prevent the under aged from downloading them into their devices but still, adult games are making big waves in app stores. Perhaps the new Confession app will also make waves for people who want to make penance.
