Got High-tech Problems? We Got Low-tech Solutions

High-tech gadgets like smartphones, laptops, tablets and even CD’s cost a lot of money. For this reason we sometimes feel lost if they get lost or damaged, either by accidents or the usual wear and tear. Sometimes these problems are not covered by warranty or could be something that tech support simply does not cover. Do not lose hope little techie, there are low-tech remedies to your high-tech problems, some can even be found right in your home. The computer experts at MyTechTeam whipped out our inner MacGyver to bring you quick and easy fixes for your damaged tech candies.

Scratched CD and DVD – often dirt and scratches can make your favorite game or album call it quits, although there are commercial kits available for repairing broken compact discs there are also a few remedies to try at home. First option is to use warm water and a mild cleanser, rubbing the grime away with your fingers and air drying the CD. When rubbing the CD it should start from the center going outward in a circular motion. If this doesn’t work using petroleum jelly or toothpaste (not the gel kind) often does the trick.  Apply a small amount of the toothpaste or jelly on a lint-free cloth and gently rub it in a circular motion on the scratched surface. Clean off the excess product and polish with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth.  Some people also use a cloth dipped in vodka to remove handprints and grime.

Cellphone/iPod Water Damage – immediately remove the gadget from water, remove the battery and pat dry with a clean towel or absorbent cloth. Bury it in a tub of uncooked rice for 24 hours, the rice should absorb most of the moisture and keep your device up and running again.

Out of Range Remote Car Key – suppose your remote car opener does not reach across the lot and for some reason you need it to open right away, all you need to do is use your head. Literally use your head by holding the metal part of the key against your chin before pressing the unlock button. Your head and all its fluids make a good conductor and will act as the antenna extension. This weird trick works, but of course only up to a certain distance, it was cooked up by Silicon Valley engineer, Tim Pozar.

Phone Camera Filter from Scratch – do you find your cell phone’s flash a little too bright washing out your pictures? Do what some seasoned photographers do by using filters or in this case tape. Putting a small piece of translucent tape on your flash can give your photos a softer look; you can even use different colored tape to achieve different effect. Of course, it would also be a good idea to get to know your phone camera and all the built-in effects.

Dirty LCD – having smudges on your flat screen or laptop display is enough to drive anyone crazy. Although there are cleaning agents available, you can make your own home brew with 1 cup of isopropyl alcohol and 1 cup of clean distilled water. Using tap water could cloud the screen especially if it has high chlorine content. Using a lint-free cotton cloth gently wipe the surface of the screen in a circular motion without pressing too much. Too much pressure can cause damage and dead pixels.
