Google+ vs Facebook, The Battle Continues

After months of teasing, Google and Facebook have entered into direct competition. The biggest social network, Facebook, has a great advantage: + 720 million users. No other social network was able to attack Facebook, which had a steady increase over the last seven years. Google+ makes this step after winning 25 million users in three months.

Google, the biggest search engine worldwide, has now a social network open to any Internet user. The option, highlighted on the home screen, can be accessed as simple as possible: entering name, age and sex, then the profile configuration and then start to socialize.

What brings the new competitor?

The Hangouts option, which allows users to hold video conferences with up to 10 people, is now offered for mobile phones. The application can be used on terminals equipped with Android 2.3+, front camera and can be downloaded from Android Market. In addition to the expansion of the operating area, Hangouts will include options similar with those on YouTube. Thus, although the 10-people-limit was not changed, the video conferences can be broadcast directly to an unlimited audience thanks to Hangouts On Air.

Interestingly, one of the surprising absences on Google+, which created several dissatisfactions among users, was the search button. A move that stunned and came without a clear explanation is the change of the messaging service, known by now as Huddle. As of yesterday, the system was named with the less-original name Messenger.

Facebook response

Mark Zuckerberg’s network has introduced a system of categories for friends, attacking the Circles system from Google+, option which was used by Google to differentiate from Facebook. The system from Facebook, called Smart Lists, allows users to share content according to friends. Moreover, suggestions of “famous” friends – from writers, journalists to analysts are also offered. To effectively pursue the latter, Facebook has entered Twitter’s field, introducing the Subscribe button.

In addition to this, the social network wants to increase the flow of news from friends, by transforming it into a newspaper-like page, with larger images and relevant information.

The Statistics

63% of the social network segment is owned by Facebook, being followed by YouTube, Twitter and MySpace;

2.5% is the monthly growth rate of the number of Facebook users;

53% of managers are looking for potential employers on social networks, according to Search Engine Journal.
