Facebook, the world’s largest social networking site, has grown leaps and bounds in the past 2 years. Many people have gone crazy over Facebook posting what’s on their mind, adding friends and chatting, and even playing games within the site. Recently, Google gave rise to a new social networking site called Google+. Google, being the world’s best search engine and the pioneer in quite a few web-based applications, is quite a force to reckon with, will it be enough to knock down Facebook?
If Facebook has a “list” of friends, Google+ has “circles” wherein you can filter your friends according to your family, friends, officemates, or you can even make a circle for your boss alone, whom you certainly want to put a limit in what to share and show. You can also make your own circle for your closest friends whom you spend the craziest days of your life, a circle who can see you in your worst form and read your personal shout outs that you definitely don’t want your family and boss to see. In Google+, you are capable of sharing the right things with the right people.
If Facebook has a “newsfeed” where you can see updates, photos, and videos, Google+ has “stream” . Facebook has a video call supported by Skype while Google+ has “hangouts”. Video call to one person at a time is good, but video call to several friends at a time is better. Google+ beats Facebook hands down in this application, where not one, not two, not three but everyone in your circle can join a face-to-face chat. Another excellent advantage of Google+ over Facebook is you can leave a video message for your friends, how cool is that?
Google plus and Facebook use the same tagging technique, a box in someone’s face allows you to just type their name automatically tagging that person in the picture. The big difference is in terms of photo tagging privacy notification. In Google+ there will be a note appearing as you tag someone, saying “Adding this tag will notify the person you have tagged. They will be able to view the photo and the related album.” Unlike in Facebook, everybody can tag you in a photo without even asking if you want to be tagged on the photo or not and you will be notified only that you have been tagged.
“Sparks” is another great feature of Google+ where you can tell Google Plus what you’re into and it will send you stuff that they think interests you and what you’ll probably like. While you wait, you always have something to read, watch, or share. And to totally boost up the services of this new social networking site, they added “huddle” to its features. From the word itself, huddle allows mobile users to chat as a group in Google Plus. Instead of texting your friends one by one to suggest or decide where to hangout, huddle allows everyone to be on the same page all at the same time, see and reply to their messages.
As of now, Google+ is still on its trial period. It will only be successful if people will use it. It is now up to them whether they are going to dump Facebook for Google Plus or not. It’s still a big mystery whether Google+ will be acknowledge by people as much as they acknowledge Facebook or even surpass its standing, or if it will just fail for the fourth time just like its attempt to bring to fame Orkut, Google Buzz, and Google Wave.
