Good Habits Every Techie Must Know

New Year’s resolutions may be so passé, but while we are still in the first month of the new decade it’s not a bad idea to start a few good habits. As we usher into a new phase in technology, here are a few techie tips that can help save you money, secure your data and keep you the happy techie person that you are.

  • Love your laptop battery – We all do it, we keep our laptop batteries attached while we go on AC power.  FYI – overcharging does not make your laptop battery last longer, in fact, it does more damage than good.  Once your battery is fully charged, remove it and keep it somewhere cool and dry, this way it will be ready when you need it. More tips on battery life on our next post.

  • Get to know your wireless bill – knowing what your provider charges for, your free minutes as well as hidden charges can help you avoid a massive heart attack when you receive your wireless bill. For people who love mobile computing, tweeting about what they ate, riding on the bus or eavesdropping on other people’s conversations, make sure you know how much data allowance you have, it’s quite easy to go through 200MB. Make sure you check your free minutes as well. Phone companies charge more when you exceed you monthly allowance, hence the wireless bill generated heart attack.

  • Be smarter when it comes to online security, whether it is on your PC or mobile. There are many dangers and pitfalls on the internet, from malicious software, viruses, online theft and scams. Keep yourself protected, or more information on PC safety contact our online tech support for 24/7 computer support and protection.

  • Use a smart password – how many people do you know use PASSWORD as their password? This is really not a smart option. Using the same password for your email, banking and other online accounts is not going to cut it either. Birthdays, schools, social security, names of pets, kids and parents are not such good ideas either. According to tech support experts online, these are easily guessed making you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Build a strong password with a non-dictionary word that has numbers, symbols and letters. Find out more about secure passwords here

  • Ergonomics – if you spend the greatest part of your day glued to the computer, you would want to be comfortable, right? Using an ergonomic keyboard or laptop stand can do wonders for you and help avoid Carpal Tunnel syndrome, back and neck pains and other health risks. Spending money on your peripherals is a good investment too.

  • Power surge anyone? – If you are living in an area where there are a lot of thunderstorms or power disturbances consider plugging your computer to a voltage regulator. This will protect your system from being fried due to power surges.

  • Check your web subscriptions – do an accounting of your web subscriptions, especially those on automatic renewal. Look into your credit card statement and let go of those you don’t need anymore. You might be surprised to see a subscription to a web catalog you don’t even read anymore. Save money on these charges and spend them on smarter buys like online data backup, security and online computer repair.
