Get more out of Google Search by following these tips and tricks.
Area Code Lookup. Need to know where an area code is located? Google shows you where it is, and shows a map of the area. Just type the area code you’re looking for.
Search within a numerical ranges using “..”. Let’s say, for example, you want to look for information about Olympic events that took place in the 1950′s, you could type in: Olympics 1950..1960
Search for specific document types. Google can search the web for specific types of files using “filetype:”. For example, if you’re looking for PowerPoint files about GTD, you can use: GTD filetype:ppt
Exclude specific terms with – . You can narrow your searches using this operator. For example, if you’re looking for information about American Idol but don’t want anything about Simon Cowell, you could use: “american idol” -cowell
Use the “site:” operator to limit search to a particular site. For example, if you are looking for posts about passwords, you can enter: passwords site:mytechteam.net
Use the OR operator. This can be useful if you’re looking at researching a topic but you’re not sure which keywords will return the information you need. It can be particularly handy in conjunction with the “site:” operator. For example, you could use: IT or “Information Technology” site:mytechteam.net
Get quick currency conversions. Did you know Google can do currency conversion. For example: 100 pounds dollars. Currently, Google only has the more mainstream currencies.
Find out what time it is anywhere in the world. Just search for “time” and then the name of the city. For example, try: time Shreveport
Use Google as a calculator. Did you know Google has a built in calculator? Try entering a calculation like 318 * (654/8 + 3).
Use Google as a spelling aid. Type any word you may not know how to spell correctly. When you click search or press enter, Google will suggest the correct spelling.
Get information about a website. If you want information about a page before actually going to that page, you can use Google to get that information. For example, you can enter: info:www.mytechteam.net
Search for related pages. Let’s say you found a great site for searching the web. But, you want to know if there are any other alternatives. With Google, you can find sites related to the site your are using. For example, you can enter: related:www.google.com
