Google Labs is the search giant’s “playground” for experimental apps, these are Google projects that are ready for testing but have not quite reached perfection. Google Labs relies on user feedback to enhance these products before releasing the final version. Although these apps are in their beta stages, some are actually quite creative and useful.
Google Similar Images – sometimes when you enter a particular keyword to search for pictures, you end up with totally unrelated search results. The Similar Images app lets you upload a picture or use a link of one that you like and Google looks for images similar to the one that you chose. This is a great tool for creating picture collages and other design projects where you need to look for images in a short period of time.
Google Sets – this simple word generator is quite useful especially with people looking for help in writing articles or web content using similar words. The user simply needs to type a series of words and the tool will focus on looking up related words, synonyms and alternatives. Although the tool is quite simple it can be used in multiple applications even in writing SEO driven content.
Google Moderator – this is a great web tool that can help companies or web site owners get the most out of their audiences’ opinions and what questions they care about. Google Moderator can also be used for group events, moderating discussions and Q&A sessions. The tool helps keep the flow of discussion on track by letting users vote on which questions are important and even add some of their own. Using the popularity of questions as basis, the moderator will be able to have a grasp which topics the audience really cares about. One good example of a webpage using this tool is the President’s Open for Questions page.
YouTube HTML5 Player – launched back in the beginning of 2010, YouTube HTML5 is able to support video and audio playback, WebM videos and works well with Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer and Firefox. Using HTML5 means that users can watch videos on any HTML5 compatible browser without having to download any plug-in. For instance in cases where Adobe Flash is not installed, YouTube will send a trigger for HTML5 player to play the videos.
Google Talk Guru – this is an experimental project available to all users that use chat apps supporting Google Talk. This app is for people using instant messengers, particularly non-smartphone users. This allows the user to be able to send simple queries or search questions via chat by inviting guro@googlelabs.com to chat. Categories include currency conversions, translations, sports scores, weather and more. Below are examples of chat queries that can be used.
