Have you ever heard the term “cyberbully”? Maybe you have or maybe you haven’t and maybe you or a friend is experiencing it right now. The question is how would you overcome a situation like this? What are the things you can do in order to save yourself from being Cyberbullied?
First things first. You probably wonder what cyber bullying is. According to Donna Cross of Edith Cowan University, “Cyberbullying involves the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated actions by an individual or group intended to embarrass, humiliate or intimidate their victim.” It can be done through abusive texts and emails, by imitating your identity online, not including you to a group online, posting harsh messages or inappropriate photos of you on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, and tagging you inappropriately. How does it feel to be cyber bullied? It feels as bad as real life bullying and by any chance, it can feel worse given the larger online audience.
Sometimes it can feel worse than real life bullying because the bully has the ability to be unidentified. Escaping is easier said than done, and it can attack you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Once the bullies attacked you, everybody online can already see what they have posted about you. Even when you are at home, you can be an easy target. Worse is if you are not a regular online user, you cannot respond or defend yourself right away.
To stop the bullies, do not answer back if you think that the issue will get more complicated in the long run. Report and block the bully then change your privacy settings. You can also tell or confer with a trusted adult. Gather all your evidence and text messages on your phone. Print emails and social networking conversations as proof. The schools/universities you are in and your parents can make a difference. With this evidence report this to your local authorities.
If you’re friend is being cyberbullied, you have to stand for him and speak up to help him stop the bullying. Tell an adult and report it to the specific website. Do not reply to the messages or any abusive photos that may offend someone. If you do so, you will only add to the cyber bullying cycle. Communicate online as how you want other people to communicate with you. Choose your battles and do not waste time in word wars.
