Cloud Gaming, Changing the Way We Play Games

Since the age of time people have been playing games single player and multi-player. From throwing pebbles to now “Cloud Gaming”. Cloud gaming enables gamers, casual and competitive alike, to have access to their personal games and files no matter where they are. Users will be able to access high definition gaming and a very large social network on any computer.  We say any computer because, you can basically play any game you want on a very old outdated computer.  So far the only company we have seen really pursuing the idea is OnLive.

onliveOnLive services will include a small console with a controller, or you can just play on anyone’s computer. OnLive promises that its streaming alternative to consoles and expensive new graphics cards will work for anyone with a highspeed internet connection and a standard-definition or high-def  TV or monitor.

On Mac and PC, OnLive operates as a browser plug-in that provides access to the service and lets gamers play games via streaming video feeds, allowing them to run on systems that previously would have struggled with heavy system requirements.  OnLive also offers the ability to capture and post clips of important gaming moments, massive spectating of games, the ability to pause a game and pick it up later, even on a different platform, and more.

OnLive says they have built some impressive video compression algorithms and are able to generate 60 frames per second in standard definition over a 1.5mbps connection and 720p over a 5mbps connection. What does all this mean?  It means one millisecond of lag time!  Most monitors are 5 millisecond response time. The lower the lag time on your monitor the faster and better quality you will get.

OnLive will have a monthly fee.  We have heard through the “grapevine” that it will be around $15.  OnLive has a scheduled release date of June 2010.  We’re ready to see what this thing can do!  Are you pre-registered?

Do you know of any services that may be competition for OnLive?  What are your opinions of this new take on gaming?  Let us know in the comments box below.
