Emails have been circulating from someone posing as mobile phone companies, Vodafone and Verizon Wireless.
The email message contains the subject, “Your credit balance is over its limits” and informs users that their credit balance is due. In order to review the payments, the email tells users to use the attached balance checker tool.
When users open the attachment they will have installed a malicious application known as TSPY ZBOT.SMP. This malware steals online banking credentials such as usernames and passwords. The stolen information is then sent to cybercriminals for other fraudulent activities. Additionally, it disables the Windows Firewall and has rootkit capabilities that make detection and removal difficult.
It is advised that users are wary before opening any attahments or clicking any links, even if they come from known sources. My Tech Team secures users from this attack utilizing it’s prevention technology which detects and blocks the spammed emails and prevents malicious files from being downloaded.
