AT&T to Sell Kindle Touch 3G

kindle touch 3gAT&T announced that it will sell the 3G version of the Kindle touch e-reader (not to be confused with the Kindle Fire).  They’ve priced this cool little device at $149.  However, here’s a surprise, 3G access is FREE!  The 3G cellular service comes bundled with the 3G versions of all new Kindle e-readers, allowing you to download books and periodicals anywhere AT&T’s 3G signal is available.  Amazon claims that entire books download within 60 seconds over the AT&T 3G network.  Since 3G service is bundled into the price, you do not have to subscribe to yet another AT&T data service.

Amazon also sells the e-readers without 3G (WiFi only) for about $50 less.  This has to be a first with such a large corporation as AT&T.  It seems that AT&T would have definitely tried to take advantage of consumers by charging yet another monthly fee, but they didn’t.  This is because, while customers don’t sign up for seperate AT&T services, AT&T is paid by Amazon every time a Kindle with 3G is sold, and this is what pays for the service.  Because the browsing and download functionality is strictly limited on the Kindle e-readers to low data consumption, AT&T doesn’t run the risk of e-readers overwhelming the 3G wireless service.

This is a great deal offered by AT&T.  We’re sure that AT&T’s hopes are that they will also convert more customers and possibly sell other devices or services when consumers come to purchase this device.  Is it really worth the extra $50-$75?  Well, in terms of what AT&T currently charges for data, yes.  However, would you really be downloading books that often on the go?  It seems that most of us will probably use our WiFi at home or other free WiFi hotspots to download all the books we want before we travel.  Although, there are some consumers who travel often that also subscribe to periodicals to be delivered to their Kindle.  So, if they are on the go, they can still receive them.  Perhaps it depends on your requirements.
